A series of ‘winter warmer’ events held by housing Curo have been given the seal of approval by residents living in Curo sheltered and retirement schemes across Bath & North East Somerset.
Residents joined customers of Curo’s Independent Living Service to enjoy a memorable day out with heart-warming food, good company, music and activities designed to boost well-being.
Students from Bath University helped to organise the four events which took place in Bath, Keynsham, Saltford and Timsbury over November and December.
Carol Davidson, Team Leader for Curo’s Older Persons Service, said: “At Curo we aim to support people to live happy, independent lives but it’s not always so easy to get out and socialise as we get older.
“At this time of year, it’s more important than ever that people have an opportunity to get together with friends, old and new, and get a well-being boost.
“This is the second year we’ve run these popular Winter Warmer events and we’ve been overwhelmed by the positive feedback we’ve received.”
Bathwick resident Thelma Field, who is 93 years old, said: “I don’t go out very often so today has been very special. I was collected from home and had lots of help throughout the day.
“I don’t walk very well. I was going to cancel but I am so pleased I didn’t. I made some new friends which were lovely. Thank you all so much – made my year.”
Barbara Cole lives in Newbridge Court and went to the Oldfield Park Winter Warmer event: “It was one of the best events I have attended for some time. Besides putting on a lovely fish and chips meal, they entertained us with music, hand massage, manicure and craft.
“Many of the residents got up and danced. If the other events were as good as this then there must be a lot of happy residents.”
A team of students from Bath University volunteered their time to organise some of the activities as part of the Zurich Challenge, supported by Bath & North East Somerset Volunteer Centre.
The volunteers, many of whom are international students, also came to the events to help run activities and to talk about life in some of their home countries including China and Germany.
Curo manages over 1,800 sheltered and retirement properties across the West of England.
Their Independent Living Service is available across Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol and South Gloucestershire and provides support for people who want to stay living independently in their own home.
