‘Geek comedian’ Steve Cross will host some of Bath’s top science, comedy and performance talent in a night of clever chaotic cabaret at The Edge at the University of Bath this Thursday, 16th March.
The Science Showoff evening promises a lineup that will never be repeated, performing in ways never seen before, including scientists, artists, filmmakers, dancers, musicians and science communicators – in fact anyone with something to show off about science.
The evening will be compèred by Steve Cross, a former lab scientist turned geek comedian, presenter and producer.
He trains clever people to be funny, and has worked with academics, museums professionals, software engineers, architects and lawyers to make comedy part of their lives.
Academics taking part from the University include:
- Dr Emma Williams will take you on a journey through the techniques of a scammer, highlighting how our automatic responses can be used against us to influence the decisions that we make.
- Caroline Hickman will show us (with the help of her real live dog, Murphy) how intervention can improve people’s quality of life. Dogs help Alzheimer’s patients become ‘free of illness’ for a moment as they connect in a loving relationship with dogs. Whilst sometimes people can struggle to remember the names of family members, they often remember the names of resident dogs. It must be love.
- Professor Chris Budd will explain how set theory can help a mathematician become an ornithologist, and why this would have prevented him from having an embarrassing experience on Radio New Zealand involving the letter K.
“Science Showoff is a brilliant way for people to learn more about the amazing areas of research happening here at the University of Bath in an accessible, fun way and in bite-sized chunks!
“Our staff are also joined by science communicators from around the UK, hilariously compered by Steve Cross. It’s a great night out with a difference,” said Helen Fripp, the show’s producer.
Science Showoff is on Thursday 16th March at 7.30pm at The Edge. For tickets and more information, click here.
