Cyclists of all ages are invited to join Sir Chris Hoy for a special ride around the new Odd Down Cycle Circuit on Wednesday 19th June.
The eleven-time World Champion and six-time Olympic cycling champion is making a unique visit to the Council’s new 1.5km closed road circuit – which was funded by British Cycling – as part of his HOY Bikes UK tour.
Chris will meet fans at the Odd Down Circuit between 10am and 11.30am and lead a public ride around the circuit – which everyone is welcome to join. Anyone wishing to attend should visit www.bathnes.gov.uk/cyclecircuit for details of travel arrangements.
The event is being organised by Evans Cycles and supported by Bath & North East Somerset Council.
Councillor David Dixon (Lib-Dem, Oldfield), Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “We’re absolutely honoured to welcome Sir Chris Hoy to the Odd Down Cycle Circuit and we’re sure that lots of people will want to come and say hello, and even enjoy a ride with one of our greatest ever Olympians. Bath & North East Somerset Council hopes that this spectacular opportunity will inspire people of all ages to get on their bikes and enjoy the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.”
Cycling has been a central part of Chris’s life ever since he got his first bike. He was inspired to get into cycling after watching the BMX chase scene in Stephen Spielberg’s movie ET. From that day on all Chris wanted to do was ride his bike; racing in BMX, mountain bike, cyclo-cross, road, and track.
It was never just about the medals but the sheer joy of cycling; 11 World Championships and 6 Olympic Gold medals later it is the same motivation that keeps him riding.
Chris said: “Facilities like Odd Down Cycle Circuit are great for cyclists of all levels, whether looking for a safe place to learn and develop your skills, or to race and train. I’m looking forward to riding the circuit on my new HOY bike and hope lots of people will join me on this stop of the UK Tour.”
The HOY Bikes UK Tour will kick off in London on Monday 17th June and finish in Edinburgh on Saturday 22nd June. For more details follow @chrishoy on Twitter or visit www.HOYbikes.com.
