How we manage the summer conditions – and there’s no let-up in sight

In the latest instalment of his Clerk’s Column, Bath Racecourse clerk of the course Ben Hicks writes exclusively for the Bath Echo.

The recent spell of weather has certainly presented its challenges here at Bath.

We have experienced a prolonged period of warm, dry conditions. And while the sunshine has been welcomed by many, it does create additional demands when it comes to preparing a racecourse.

During periods like this, the work behind the scenes becomes even more important.

The grounds team have been working exceptionally hard over the past few weeks, watering overnight with our bowser to gain maximum benefit from the limited quantities we can apply whilst temperatures and wind speeds are at their lowest.

Our aim is always the same: to provide a safe, level racing surface with excellent grass cover.

It takes a great deal of work to achieve that during such dry weather, but I am pleased to say that the course was in excellent condition ahead of the fixture on Wednesday 15th July.

One aspect that is proving particularly valuable this year is the way the fixture list has been planned.

During the race planning process, we deliberately looked to create a quieter spell through July and August, with two-week gaps between meetings.

Those recovery periods are proving their worth in the current conditions, allowing the track valuable time to recover from bruising between fixtures and giving us the opportunity to carry out watering continuously.

As always, we continue to monitor the weather closely. Conditions can change very quickly, and our preparations are constantly adapted to ensure the track remains in the best possible shape.

While the recent dry spell has required plenty of extra work, the course has responded well. At the time of writing, though, the forecast tells me we will not be relaxing any time soon.

We are now once again benefiting from a short break before racing returns to Bath on Friday 31st July.

That meeting is always one of the most enjoyable evenings of our calendar, as we welcome back The Wurzels for what will be their 19th year performing here at Bath Racecourse.

The Wurzels have become a much-loved part of our season, and they never fail to create a fantastic atmosphere.

Their performance is always hugely popular, with racegoers staying on to enjoy an evening of music after the final race.

The Wurzels have built up a loyal following at Bath over the years, and it is a pleasure to welcome them back once again.
