Doubles for Wintle and Marsh on charity raceday at Bath

Trainer Adrian Wintle and jockey Finley Marsh each bagged a double in the Wiltshire And Bath Air Ambulance Charity Raceday fixture at Bath on Wednesday 15th July.

There was a six-race card on a glorious sunny afternoon at the Lansdown track, where going was firm.

The £8,000 opener – The Broughton Transport The Mane Logistics Choice Apprentice Handicap Stakes (Class 5), over five furlongs and 160 yards – was won by 7/2 fancy Grey Horizon, trained by Scott Dixon in Nottinghamshire and ridden by Christian Howarth.

Second, one length behind, was Merrimack (5/1) from the Stuart Williams camp in Newmarket, Suffolk, and with Chloe Lyons on board.

The second race, the £8,000 Resolution Canter Cup EBF Restricted Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (Class 5) (EBF Restricted Race Qualifier) over five furlongs and 10 yards, provided a narrow victory for Newmarket-based handlers Julia and Shelley Birkett.

Their 3/1 shot Sheer Beauty, piloted by Dylan Hogan, won by a nose from runner-up Tricky Jenny, a 13/2 chance from James Owen’s yard in Newmarket and with Luke Morris aboard.

Next was the Home Group Financial Wealth Management Trophy Handicap Stakes (Class 6) (Bath Summer Sprint Series Qualifier), also over five furlongs and 10 yards. And there was another close finish.

The winner was 5/4 favourite Darkened Edge, sent out by Christopher Mason (Caerwent, Monmouthshire).

Under Ryan Kavanagh, Darkened Edge prevailed by a neck from second-placed Little Miss Magic (9/4), trained by Patrick Chamings in Baughurst, Hampshire, and partnered by Callum Hutchinson.

The fourth contest, The Novacast Don’t Come Last Handicap Stakes (Class 6) (Bath Summer Stayers’ Series Qualifier) over one mile and six furlongs, resulted in success for 1/4 favourite Campeona.

Trained in Newmarket by Sir Mark Prescott and with Morris in the irons, Campeona prevailed by two lengths from runner-up Endofastorm (5/1), cared for by Joe Ponting in Hillesley, Gloucestershire, and steered by Kieran O’Neill.

Wintle – who is based in Rodley, Gloucestershire – and Marsh claimed their first triumph of the afternoon when 11/8 favourite Yokkell won the penultimate race, The Wiltshire And Bath Air Ambulance Charity Handicap Stakes (Class 6) over one mile, three furlongs and 137 yards.

Second, one-and-a-quarter lengths behind, was Jimmy Mark (11/4), trained by Zoe Hawkins in Blackborough, Devon, and urged on by O’Neill.

Wintle and Marsh scored again in the closing one-mile Stakes Are Always High Handicap Stakes (Class 6), when 9/4 joint favourite Havana Club came home first by a head.

The runner-up was 9/4 joint favourite Blue Hero, also running for Wintle. Joe Leavy rode.

The next meeting at Bath will be The Wurzels And Cider Racenight on Friday 31st July.

There will be a six-race card – starting at 5.35pm – followed by a live performance by legendary West Country band The Wurzels.
