Round-up of the local hockey action – Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th March.

Team Bath Buccaneers women’s 1st XI and 4th XI and City of Bath men’s 1st XI all secured the championship in their respective hockey divisions on Saturday 28th March

Team Bath Buccaneers’ women’s 1st XI are champions of England Hockey Women’s Conference West.

And the women’s 4th XI made it a day of double title celebrations for the club by securing the West Hockey West Women’s Division 2 East crown with a game to spare.

The 1st XI went to basement side Slough 1st XI on Saturday 28th March for their final match of the campaign holding a two-point lead over second-placed Cardiff & Met 1st XI but with a better goal difference than the Welsh side.

Tabitha Tinniswood gave Team Bath a 16th-minute lead, only for Betsy Parsons to level for the Berkshire outfit in the 61st minute.

The 1-1 draw – which enabled Slough to finish third-bottom – would be enough to send the championship to Somerset, unless Cardiff & Met chalked up a big win at Lansdown 1st XI the same afternoon.

But Cheltenham-based Lansdown helped ensure the Buccaneers ended up three points clear at the top by overcoming the side from the principality 1-0.

Cardiff & Met’s defeat meant they were overtaken for runners-up spot by Trojans 1st XI and finished in third place.

Team Bath’s record was played 18, won 12, drew four and lost two, with 43 goals for, 19 goals against and 40 points banked.

The 4th XI bagged their silverware by prevailing 2-1 at Marlborough 1st XI on 28th March, leaving them five points ahead of City of Bath 1st XI with one round of fixtures to go.

Team Bath went ahead in the 55th minute but a Marlborough goal from a penalty corner tied things up on the hour. The winner came seven minutes later.

A spokesman for the Buccs said: “Huge congratulations to every player who’s pulled on the shirt across the squads, to the coaches Christian Moody, Pete Walker and Martin Pellow who’ve nurtured and guided the squads week in, week out, and to the managers who keep everything running smoothly behind the scenes.”

Team Bath men’s 1st XI missed out on finishing third in England Hockey Men’s Conference West, despite triumphing 5-2 at Exeter-based strugglers Isca 1st XI on Sunday 29th March in their closing game of the campaign.

Chichester 1st XI pipped the Buccaneers for third place by just one point, a 55th-minute goal ensuring the West Sussex club were 2-1 victors at Cardiff & Met 2nd XI. The Somerset men ended up fourth.

On target for Team Bath in Devon were Alexander Butterfield (2, both from penalty corners), Andrew Oxburgh (2) and Oliver Brown. The latter two’s goals came in a late three-minute spell during which Isca also scored.

City of Bath men’s 1st XI cruised to the West Hockey West Men’s Division 2 East title with two games to go, blitzing visitors Newent 1st XI 14-2 on 28th March.

James Kellock led the way with a hat-trick – including two strikes from penalty corners – and the champions’ other goals came from Syd Arblaster (2), Tom Deverell (2 including a penalty corner), Lewis Townsend, Ellis Tootill, George Simonds, Jake Laidlaw, Harry Kellock, Scott Tweedie and Ben Kirby Woollett.

The result means that City of Bath have hit double figures in the league on four occasions this season, the other sides on the receiving end being Evesham & Badsey 1st XI, Hereford 1st XI and Bristol & West 3rd XI.

There is no West Hockey action for local sides over the Easter weekend. The next league games will be on Saturday 11th April.
