Team Bath women’s and men’s 1s win, club get new outreach partner

Team Bath Buccaneers’ women’s and men’s 1st XIs won on Saturday 18th October, beating Exeter 1st XI and Cardiff & Met 2nd XI respectively

Team Bath Buccaneers’ women’s 1st XI stretched their unbeaten start to the England Hockey Women’s Conference West campaign to five matches by winning at lowly Exeter 1st XI on Saturday 18th October.

The Buccs’ 3-1 success keeps them in second place, two points behind table-topping Cardiff & Met 1st XI.

Katie Gwyther gave Team Bath a 12th-minute lead, only for Claire Rochelle to equalise.

But Izzy Usher and Sophie Shield struck for the guests in the space of three minutes to hand the Buccaneers their fourth victory of the season.

The Buccaneers’ men’s 1st XI climbed up to fourth place in England Hockey Men’s Conference West thanks to a 2-1 comeback win over visitors Cardiff & Met 2nd XI on Sunday 19th October.

Matty George opened the scoring for the travellers in the 21st minute but Sam Watson levelled eight minutes later.

Patrick McElhinney netted from a penalty corner in the 69th minute to settle the match in Team Bath’s favour.

The Buccaneers have announced a new partnership with Elite Financial Consulting Ltd, who have become the latest supporter of the club’s community outreach programme.

The project aims to provide hockey coaching to state-school children who may not have prior exposure to the sport. It now delivers to 11 schools in Bath & North East Somerset.

A taster day for primary-school children will be held at the University of Bath on Friday 28th November (9.30am to 2pm). The club expect that more than 150 youngsters will take part.

Keith Walters, the Buccaneers’ talent academy director, said: “Our community coaching programme is now into its third year of delivering hockey to the state primary schools in Bath.

“It’s fantastic to gain the support and backing of Elite Financial Consulting Ltd, who recognise the importance of reaching out to children who would otherwise not have the opportunity to play such a great team sport which in turn creates health benefits, friendships and skills for life.

“We’re very grateful to Jon Fry [Elite’s director] and his team and look forward to a long working relationship in order to keep this programme running.”

Fry said: “I believe that getting children into sport at a young age really helps them to prosper and also is good for a healthy mind and body.”
