Team Bath women’s 1s complete league double but men’s 1s slip up

There were mixed fortunes for Team Bath Buccaneers’ women’s and men’s 1st XIs when they faced opponents from the Marlow club last weekend

Team Bath Buccaneers’ women’s 1st XI completed the double over their Marlow counterparts by recording a 5-3 home victory in England Hockey Women’s Conference West on Saturday 29th November.

The Buccs opened the campaign with a 3-0 away win over the Buckinghamshire side. And they completed their pre-Christmas programme in the league by taking their tally of wins to six from 10 outings by again getting the better of Marlow.

Ruby Balcombe gave the visitors a fifth-minute lead but Izzy Usher soon equalised from a penalty corner.

Sophia Barton struck from a penalty corner in the 11th minute to put Team Bath ahead. A goal from Katie Gwyther and another two from Usher meant the Buccaneers led 5-1 after 49 minutes.

Marlow hit back with a goal apiece from Helena Sykora and Poppy Godfrey (penalty corner).

Team Bath lie in third place in the table, three points behind leaders Cardiff & Met 1st XI.

The Buccaneers’ men’s 1st XI went into the Men’s Conference West festive break with a defeat, losing 4-3 to guests Marlow 1st XI in the battle of two of the high-flying teams on Sunday 30th November.

A pair of penalty corners from Sam North put Marlow 2-0 up but Andrew Oxburgh and Jordan Hardaker scored to see the teams level after 30 minutes.

A penalty stroke from Tom Ferris regained the initiative for the travellers but a 68th-minute goal from a penalty corner by Alex Renwick seemed to have secured a draw for Team Bath.

However, Jayden Zamler netted in the 70th minute to hoist Marlow up to second place in the standings and give them revenge for their opening-day home defeat by the Buccs.

Team Bath are now in fourth spot, seven points behind leaders Clifton Robinsons 1st XI.
