Hampset Sunday XI come unstuck again in North Somerset League

A match round-up by Hampset Cricket Club – Sunday 27th July.

Hampset Sunday XI lost at home by eight wickets when they met Carsons & Mangotsfield

Hampset’s Sunday XI were defeated by eight wickets when they entertained Carsons & Mangotsfield in North Somerset Cricket League Sunday Conference Division Three.

The hosts went into the match on Sunday 27th July looking to recover from the previous week’s humbling at the hands of Easton Cowfolk – but they came unstuck again.

Winning the toss on a used pitch, Hampset elected to bat.

Opener Ashton Wright (20) fared well as the home side lost quick wickets.

They were 20-5 when Harry Hall joined Wright.

Following their collapse against Easton, Hampset knew they had to show more resilience this time around.

Hall and Wright batted well together, fending off the remaining overs from the opening bowlers, before Wright was out.

Then Hall departed when he was stumped, finishing with a neatly made 32.

Youngster Alfie Jay Robinson (16 not out) joined Tom Marquiss (13) at the crease, and the pair were able to put together a decent ninth-wicket partnership to take Hampset past 100 and to their first point of the day.

Then Marquiss was caught and Hampset closed on 102 all out.

Hampset hoped to start well in the field and put pressure on their opponents.

Hall (1-26) and Marquiss took the new ball and kept things tight, but the desperately needed early wickets refused to come.

Eventually, Marquiss took a catch off Hall’s bowling for Hampset’s first wicket.

However, Hampset managed only more more scalp, taken by Sarfaraz Mahar (1-26), before the visiting batters reached their target by posting 105-2.

Robinson (0-16) and Benji Gleave (0-15) bowled well and were unlucky not to take wickets.

Hall was Hampset’s man of the match for his batting and bowling displays.

Hampset will resume league action on Sunday 3rd August, when they go to Blagdon.
