A match round-up by Hampset Cricket Club – Sunday 20th July.

Hampset’s Sunday XI were crushed by 195 runs when they visited Easton Cowfolk

Hampset’s Sunday XI were dismissed for just 27 by table-toppers Easton Cowfolk and ended up being hammered by 195 runs.

Home side Easton had posted 222-8 in the North Somerset League Sunday Conference Division Three encounter on Sunday 20th July.

Thanks to some leaky covers, Hampset were greeted by a pitch that comfortably failed the key test.

Winning the toss in Bristol, the visitors elected to field.

Openers Harry Hall and Sarfaraz Mahar bowled well but were unable to make the early breakthrough.

However, a double bowling change – bringing on experienced duo Jack Hughes (8-3-3-40) and Tom Marquiss (8-2-2-17) – paid off, with Hampset getting a foothold in the game.

When Alfie-Jay Robinson took the valuable wicket of the remaining Easton opener in the 19th over, Hampset were in a good position.

But some loose bowling and a few mistakes in the field quickly shifted the momentum back in Easton’s favour.

A returning Hall and Hughes picked up a wicket a piece at the death.

Aware that the top wicket-taker in the league was leading the Easton attack, Hampset set out to bat their allotted time and accelerate in the latter half of their innings should there be wickets in hand.

This went poorly. The effective Mike Jones snapped up 6-10 in his eight overs, five of which were maidens.

Charlie Dolman (9) showed Hampset’s only real resistance, before being trapped leg before.

When the Easton change bowler came into the attack, Shan Mahar – in at 17-9 – showed no respect for the situation and smacked him through extra cover for two runs. It was the highlight of Hampset’s chase.

Rufus Fletcher picked up a boundary but the end soon came.

Although it was not Hampset’s day, their bowling and fielding were praised by the opposition.

Hampset named Hall their man of the match. He led the line well and bowled extremely tightly at the death when many other bowlers were being hit for runs.

Third-placed Hampset will be looking to return to winning ways on Sunday 27th July when they entertain Carsons & Mangotsfield.
