A match round-up by Hampset Cricket Club – Saturday 19th July.

Hampset 2nd XI recorded only their second victory of the league season when they beat Taveners
Hampset 2nd XI’s bid to beat the drop from Bristol & District Cricket Association Division Seven East took a timely boost with a 39-run victory at Taveners 1st XI on Saturday 19th July.
The match embodied spirit, grit and unity. With Hampset’s season on a knife-edge and the threat of relegation looming large, this fixture carried more weight than most – and the team rose to the challenge.
The guests elected to bat first, and early jitters gave way to composed resistance.
Anchoring the innings, Jacob Marquiss batted with elegance and control to score 46, keeping things stable through the middle overs with seven eye-catching boundaries.
Ashton Wright complemented that effort with a fluent 34, striking five fours and ensuring Hampset rebuilt after the early losses.
Jurie Fick added real value too with 29 runs, contributing to critical partnerships that took the side to a defendable 179-9 off 40 overs.
Though no batter reached a half-century, the innings was defined by application and teamwork – rotating the strike, absorbing pressure and placing value on every run.
The second half of the game saw Hampset step up with clarity of purpose.
Harry Hall made an instant impact with the ball, removing two key batters and finishing with 2-21 from eight overs.
James Dorey then applied the squeeze later on, collecting 2-33 and ensuring that any signs of a late surge were quickly extinguished.
The rest of the bowling attack maintained pressure and control, refusing to allow Taveners any sustained momentum.
In the field, Hampset were sharp, vocal and committed. No-one embodied that more than Wright, who followed up his batting effort with two excellent catches, setting the tone for the team’s energy and discipline across the ground.
Taveners closed on 140-6.
What elevated this result was not individual brilliance – though there was plenty – but the cohesion and camaraderie on display.
From top to tail, Hampset functioned as one determined unit, communicating and supporting each other every step of the way.
All members of the Hampset team were named player of the match. Every player contributed – and it was the collective effort that ensured Hampset got over the line and began their survival push with belief.
The win was only Hampset’s second of the campaign in Division Seven East. They will be looking for another when they take on Brislington 3rd XI at Blomfield Rise on Saturday 26th July.
