Hampset 1st XI all out for 103 as Knowle complete a double

Hampset 1st XI lost to Knowle 2nd XI for the second time this season

Hampset’s 1st XI were skittled for 103 as they lost by five wickets at home to Knowle 2nd XI in Bristol & District Cricket Association Division Two on Saturday 19th July.

The hosts were looking to avenge a heavy defeat by the South Bristol side from earlier in the season.

Hampset skipper Sam Marquiss lost the toss and the Bath team were asked to bat first on a dry wicket at Bloomfield Rise.

Only two batters reached double figures. Opener Freddy Hiscott made 15 and Fergal McDonald top-scored with 25 in the middle order.

With the help of 29 extras, Hampset limped to 103 all out in 30.1 overs. The total was four runs better than the 99 all out they achieved at Knowle on Saturday 17th May.

With the majority of the Hampset batters being either bowled or caught in the slips, the hosts knew that a good line and length would be the order of the day when they came to bowl.

In the first over of the Knowle reply, Marquiss threw the playbook out of the window. He banged his fourth ball halfway down the wicket, getting a bit of stick in the pitch and having the Knowle opener caught at square leg.

With three slips and a gully in place, Marquiss claimed his second wicket. It was almost a carbon copy of his first, except this time the Knowle number three played the ball down but onto his own stumps.

With Hiscott opening from the other end, he decided to follow in his captain’s footsteps. He picked up two wickets, one of which came after another mistimed shot from a ball pitching closer to the bowler’s toes than the batter’s.

Knowle were 13-3 – and that became 28-4 thanks to a diving catch from Ethan Silcox, meaning 103 looked like a fairly competitive score.

However, a partnership between Knowle number five Tyler Anderson and number six Priyansh Jha turned things around. Anderson smoked the ball through the covers with aplomb.

Silcox did manage to grab a wicket with a ball from the playbook, nipping one back in down the slope and taking the top of off stump.

But the Hampset efforts were in vain as Knowle reached their target in the 24th over with five wickets down, Anderson finishing on 40 not out.

Hampset visit second-bottom Frampton Cotterell, from South Gloucestershire, in Division Two on Saturday 26th July. Frampton are only two points behind Hampset in the standings.
