Two wins from two games for City Women since defeat in cup final

Poppy Spratt scored for the second successive match to hand Bath City Women the honours from their derby at Paulton Rovers Ladies on Wednesday 6th May.

Spratt’s 53rd-minute goal ensured the Romans overcame Paulton 1-0 at Winterfield Road in Shield Services Group South West Regional Women’s League Division One North.

Mid-table City dominated but had to settle for Spratt’s effort just after the break to see off struggling Rovers, who have won only once in the league this season and have been relegated.

Jess Evans sent over a corner and Spratt knocked the ball into the net with her hip.

The Romans created a series of other good opportunities but the closest they came to a further goal was when a header from Jasmine Rennie was deflected onto a post.

However, Paulton openings were few – and their best was a first-half free-kick from Evie Thatcher that hit the roof of the net.

City bounced back from their defeat by Weston-super-Mare Women in the Somerset Women’s Junior Cup final on Thursday 30th April by overcoming Stockwood Wanderers Women 2-0 in the league on Sunday 3rd May.

The result gave the Romans their first victory in six matches across all competitions.

Bath went ahead just before the half-hour mark.

Rennie latched onto a crossfield ball from Katie Davies, went past Stockwood’s Alexandra Andrade and set up Beth Edwards who fired beyond stand-in keeper Charley Friend.

The second goal came 13 minutes into the second period, Spratt heading home from six yards following a cross by Rennie.

Injuries meant that Wanderers finished the match at the Cannon Clarke Stadium @ Twerton Park with nine players.

Bath City Women Development were beaten when they faced in-form Bridport Women at St Mary’s Field in Somerset County Women’s League Division One on Sunday 3rd May.

The West Dorset side had their skipper Cait Corbett – normally a defender/midfielder – in goal but secured a 3-1 victory, Zoe Witcombe on target for the visitors.

Lily Pollard, Laura Tattersall and Flo Valinski bagged the Bees’ goals, the hosts’ recent record now being three wins and three draws from six matches.
