Ten-man Odd Down concede double to promotion-chasing Wells

Odd Down conceded the double to promotion-chasing Wells City when the sides met at the Athletic Ground in Jewson Western League Division One on Saturday 13th December.

The second-placed Mendip side cruised to a 4-0 victory against a Down team who had James Book sent off seven minutes from the end.

The scoreline meant Wells have bagged four goals in a game on two occasions against Odd Down this season, having prevailed 4-2 at the Lew Hill Memorial Ground on Saturday 1st November.

In the return match, captain Ross McErlain scored twice for City, who led 1-0 at the break in front of a crowd of 98.

He struck to give them their interval advantage and went on to grab their third goal.

Charlie Dashfield got the second goal and Jake Brown completed Wells’ haul.

Under-18 player Gracjen Blajek made his first-team team debut as a substitute for Odd Down.

Odd Down starting XI: Matthew Green, Jack Kelsey, Lewis Bahadur, James Book, Treyvond Anderson, Joe Paradise, Charlie Saunders, Robert Hobbs, Nicholas Taylor, Alfie Kelsey, Toby Davis.

Defeat at Wells was the Down’s 11th reverse of the Division One season.

But it must be remembered that City really are on fire at present. Their two wins over Odd Down sandwich four matches – three in the league and one in the Francis Hillier Premier Cup – in which they banged in a total of 23 goals.

The Down will be looking for their sixth league win when they entertain Mendip Broadwalk on Saturday 20th December (3pm).

Meanwhile, Odd Down Development go into their festive break on a high after thumping Peasedown Albion Reserves 6-1 in a Paulton Hospital Cup second-round tie at the Lew Hill Memorial Ground on Saturday 13th December.

Abdoulaye Ndiaye was man of the match for the winners, who led only 1-0 at the break.

Stan Dickenson notched that first-half goal, scoring in the 43rd minute.

Dickenson completed his brace in a second half that also saw Ndiaye score twice and Tyrone Mullholland and substitute Finbar Quinn hit one apiece.

Peasedown’s consolation came from substitute Ryan Jefferies.

The match paired the top two sides in Trophies of Radstock Mid Somerset League Division One.

Odd Down head the table with 23 points from nine games – and second-placed Albion have a perfect record from five outings.

The Down are now without a match until they receive Chew Magna Reserves in the league on Saturday 3rd January.
