Odd Down were beaten 2-1 when they visited South Bristol side Mendip Broadwalk in Jewson Western Football League Division One on Saturday 9th August.

On a dry pitch and with the wind in their favour in the first period, the Down made a bright start at BBS Park Filwood Playing Fields.

But they went behind after five minutes, Connor Biggins firing home from just inside the box.

The guests hit back to stretch Mendip, whose keeper had to be alert midway through the first half to make a double save.

Tempers flared shortly afterwards when Broadwalk skipper Jordan Hughes made a late challenge on Odd Down defender Jack Kelsey. This resulted in a yellow card for the tackler – but the incident seemed to spur on the hosts, and they began to win more 50/50 balls.

And Mendip doubled their lead just before the interval, Josh Gilborson marking his competitive home debut by hooking the ball into the net from close range.

However, with the referee about the blow his whistle for half-time, the Down were awarded a penalty after Lewis Bahadur was felled in the box by the Broadwalk custodian. Striker Jake Curtis – a summer signing from Cornish club Saltash United – made no mistake from the spot to reduce the arrears.

Neither side created much after the break, with openings being restricted to half-chances, and Mendip – with the wind in their favour – went on to take maximum points.

The Down will play their first home game of the Western League season tonight (Tuesday 12th August) when they take on neighbours Radstock Town at the Lew Hill Memorial Ground (7.45pm).

Radstock have started their league campaign with two defeats – 3-0 at Longwell Green Sports and 1-0 at home to Bitton – and are bottom of the table.
