Goalkeeper turns down offer of new contract with Bath City

Keeper Charlie Binns has turned down the offer of a new contract with Bath City.

The 21-year-old – a former pupil of Millfield School in Street – joined the Romans in October on non-contract terms, having departed Ipswich Town last summer.

In December, Binns signed a permanent deal at the Cannon Clarke Stadium @ Twerton Park.

Binns produced some superb displays for City last term – and he was the hero in two successive matches in the Isuzu FA Trophy.

He saved a spot-kick when Bath got the better of Bracknell Town on penalties in the second round on Saturday 15th November.

And at Dorking Wanderers in the third round, on Saturday 13th December, he saved two penalties – effectively three, as one was retaken and stopped both times – to earn the Romans a 4-2 victory in the shootout after the sides played out a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes.

Binns was sent off during Bath’s Enterprise National League South game at Maidstone United in December, prompting the visitors’ then-manager Darren Way to slam the referee. However, the red card was overturned on appeal.

In a statement confirming the goalie’s exit, Bath said: “We can confirm that Charlie Binns has declined our offer of a new contract and will be moving on from the club.

“We thank Charlie for his time with us and he goes with our best wishes for the future.”

The Romans will play their second pre-season friendly when they entertain Cardiff City U21 at the Cannon Clarke Stadium @ Twerton Park tomorrow, Tuesday 14th July (7.45pm).
