A match round-up by Hampset Cricket Club – Saturday 9th August.

Hampset 1st XI lost by two runs when they visited Twyford House 2nd XI
Hampset 1st XI were pipped by two runs when they visited Twyford House 2nd XI in Bristol & District Cricket Association Division Two on Saturday 9th August.
Visiting skipper Sam Marquiss won the toss and elected to field at Penpole Lane.
Freddy Hiscott removed Henry King for 22 – a short but destructive innings – in the sixth over, Adam Hodgson catching at cover.
Not long after came a second wicket for Hampset – an LBW shout from Marquiss leaving Twyford 35-2.
A useful partnership formed after the openers were removed.
A spell from Fergal Mcdonald (4-0-24-0) was followed by the introduction of Ethan Silcox and Tom Marquiss. The pair’s contribution paid off, ending this partnership with Silcox bowling their number four for 12 at the end of the 19th over.
Then a bogged-down batter’s poor shot flicked straight to the captain – two wickets in two balls.
Another wicket fell, this with a smothered catch from debutant Ashton Wright, leaving Twyford on 103-5 in the 23rd over.
Then spin was introduced – the last five overs of Tom Marquiss’ eight and a four-over enticing spell from Matt Hill with a high release and dip variation.
Unfortunately, a quiet stint from this pair saw a chance put down and shots more in favour of the batters. But the duo earned one wicket each.
The final four wickets were taken to earn Hampset five well-deserved bowling points.
The Twyford tail was restricted from 163-7 in the 33rd over to an all-out score of 192 in the 38th.
Sam Marquiss finished with 8-1-25-2, Hiscott had 6.4-0-40-3 and Silcox returned 7-1-27-3.
For the reply, Wright claimed his deserved spot at the top of the order with Ollie Smith.
A couple of tight overs saw Smith removed with no danger to the scorers.
This brought Louie Gratton-Peters to the crease. He and Wright battled on until the 15th over, when Gratton-Peters fell for 17.
Hiscott joined Wright for a partnership that spanned another 10 overs.
A short cameo from Hiscott saw him score 25 and depart in the 25th over to leave Hampset 88-3. Then Wright was out for 35.
Mcdonald arrived at number six to put on a partnership just shy of 50 with Sam Marquiss in six overs to bring Hampset to 147-5 in the 34th over.
However, Hampset had a little topple. The skipper departed for 35 – and off the next ball, Hodgson returned to the clubhouse.
Silcox joined Hill. Superb efforts from both batters saw Hampset needing 14 from the last over.
The first ball was scooped for six by Hill. However, after a single, the wicket of Silcox and then a well-run three from Hill meant he and Rory Mcdonald were left needing four off the final ball for a Hampset win. They managed a single.
There was dismay and frustration for Hampset, being so close to a win that was deserved but, most importantly, required to boost the survival bid.
Hampset will face Old Down at Bloomfield Rise in the league on Saturday 16th August.
