Lansdown 2nd XI were ripped out for only 42 by Bristol & District Cricket Association Division One title-hopefuls Whitchurch 1st XI and suffered a humiliating defeat.

Lansdown 2nd XI had a sobering afternoon at Whitchurch, being removed for 42 and losing by 128 runs

The Down were crushed by 128 runs after dismissing the home side for a seemingly beatable total at Norton Lane on Saturday 9th August.

Things looked good for the visitors when, after electing to field, they reduced Whitchurch to 99-5.

The hosts rallied to 165-7 but lost their final three wickets in 2.3 overs for the addition of five runs. Whitchurch were all out for 170 off 37 overs.

Ollie Gooding bowled six overs for 12 runs, collecting three wickets in the process.

Eoin Godfrey snared 2-41 from eight overs.

Unfortunately for Lansdown, Whitchurch’s chief run-getter was extras. The guests gifted 46 runs, 31 of them coming from wides.

The best of the home batters was number five Aaron Meszaros, who was run out by Sam Lindsley for a 44-ball 30 that contained six boundaries.

In reply, the Down collapsed to 15-6. Three of the top seven batters were back in the hutch without scoring.

Opener Danny Poole’s 6 was Lansdown’s biggest contribution until number eight Godfrey managed 10.

Sam Costello, in at number nine, finished undefeated on 10 and dominated a final-wicket stand with the stonewalling Lindsley (2 from 17 balls) that produced 14 runs – the biggest partnership on the Down’s card.

The travellers were removed in 19.4 overs – and Whitchurch, whose win lifted them to the top of the table, conceded only three extras.

Just four bowlers were called upon to skittle Lansdown.

Charlie Beedell returned 4-14 in eight overs, Ben Thatcher snaffled 4-18 off eight overs, James England grabbed 1-5 from 1.4 overs and Hayden Williams sent down two wicketless overs for four runs.

Lansdown will be looking to put this difficult encounter behind them when they take on eighth-placed Hambrook 1st XI at Combe Park on Saturday 16th August.
