Lansdown 1sts go top of league by winning off penultimate ball

Lansdown 1st XI have gone to the top of West of England Premier League Premier 2 Bristol / Somerset.

Taunton Deane 1st XI went into the 13th round of matches in pole position but suffered a surprise five-wicket defeat at Congresbury 1st XI.

That meant Lansdown’s two-wicket victory – off the penultimate ball – over fellow title-challengers Golden Hill 1st XI at Combe Park on Saturday 25th July lifted them to the summit, 11 points clear of Deane.

Bristol outfit Golden Hill were restricted to 215-9 in their 50 overs after being inserted.

A wicket apiece for Josh Smith and Alex Bindloss left the visitors 16-2 but a third-wicket stand between Kerwin Mungroo (33) and Harawal Wassam (23) added 49 runs.

The momentum swung Lansdown’s way again as they reduced Golden Hill to 74-5.

But Ruben Shehean (81) and Ed Bourdeaux (29) got the travellers out of trouble by racking up 116 for the sixth wicket. Both men fell to Smith, who finished with 3-32 off 10 overs.

Praneel Choughule snapped up 2-58 from nine overs.

Lansdown slipped to 64-3 in reply, opener Tejas Bante making 31. But skipper Jordan Smith (48) and Noah Davis (62) compiled 78 for the fourth wicket to get the hosts back on track.

However, Lansdown were indebted to 25 extras for helping them over the line. Victory was achieved at 219-8 in 49.5 overs, Toheed Hamid grabbing 3-29 from 9.5 overs for the visitors.

Lansdown 2nd XI dismissed struggling hosts Keynsham 2nd XI for 89 and cruised to an eight-wicket victory in Bristol & District Cricket Association Division One on 25th July.

Having chosen to bat at the Frank Taylor Memorial Ground, Keynsham slumped to 26-4.

Captain Cameron Emmott’s 21 raised hopes – but when he was bowled by Sam Bowery, Keynsham were 63-5. Emmott’s exit triggered a collapse to 66-7.

Extras (22) top-scored, the home team being removed in 32.2 overs.

Bowery was the most impressive bowler, with 3-14 in eight overs.

There was also a three-wicket haul for Eoin Godfrey, whose eight overs went for 26 runs.

Openers James Pitman (21) and Adam Carlin (17) got the Lansdown response off a fine start, but both departed with the scoreboard reading 49.

It was left to skipper Dan Veal (21 not out) and Harry Veal (20 not out) to shepherd Lansdown to 90-2 from 13.3 overs.

Roy Emmott and Charlie Husband claimed the wickets.

Will Harrison returned 5-17 off eight overs as Lansdown 3rd XI overpowered hosts Whitchurch 3rd XI by 88 runs in Bristol & District Cricket Association Division Nine East on 25th July.

The guests posted 234-7 in their 40 overs after electing to bat, opener Dave Hirst hitting two sixes and eight fours in his 85-ball 83.

Number five Josh Brain had an even better strike rate, his unbeaten 75 coming off 52 deliveries and featuring four sixes and nine fours.

James Bryant and Simon Meszaros snaffled three wickets apiece for Whitchurch, who crumbled to 41-5 in reply.

Pete Lloyd (25) and Max Gammon (42) stopped the rot by adding 59 for the sixth wicket. But Whitchurch had little else to offer and were skittled for 146 in 33.1 overs, extras contributing 32.

Although Harrison took the bowling honours, Ashton Williams (2-16 from five overs) and Tarapathi Polgollage (2-32 off eight overs) did plenty of damage.

Lansdown Sunday Development XI were beaten by six wickets when they entertained their Hinton Charterhouse counterparts in North Somerset League Sunday Conference Division One.

Put in at Combe Park on Sunday 26th July, Lansdown were removed for 124 in 29.1 overs, having tumbled from 78-2.

Only captain Josh Smith (46 off 45 balls) and extras (20) managed more than 12.

The skipper and Williams (11) put on 54 for the third wicket.

There were two scalps apiece for Hinton’s George Major, Finn Grant, Michael Abington and S Abington.

The guests found themselves 57-4 in reply, opener Henry Allen scoring 22.

But Pheko Moletsane (65 not out off 53 deliveries) and Jarred Jardine (18 not out) lifted them to 127-4 from 17.3 overs, Sam West topping the Lansdown bowling charts with 2-25 in five overs.

Lansdown Women’s 1st XI were given a walkover by Queen Camel Women’s 1st XI ahead of their Somerset Women’s T20 Blitz Division Two match on 26th July.
