A match round-up by Hampset Cricket Club – Saturday 2nd August.

Chris Kindon starred as Hampset 3rd XI overcame their Timsbury counterparts

Chris Kindon carried his bat for 58 not out as Hampset 3rd XI overcame their Timsbury counterparts by six wickets in Bristol & District Cricket Association Division Nine East on Saturday 2nd August.

Timsbury asked Hampset to bowl first on what looked a very dry pitch at St Mary’s Church of England Primary School.

Kindon (8-0-26-2) opened the attack and made the breakthrough in the first over.

Benji Ferguson (8-1-19-0) bowled well with no reward.

Runs off the bat were not easy to get on what was a very tricky pitch. But just as the second-wicket partnership was looking to accelerate, an excellent running catch at deep long-on from Henry Bolton gave Kindon his second wicket.

Alfie Robinson (7.4-0-17-2) continued to keep the pressure on and got one to pop and take the glove of the dangerous number three just as he was looking comfortable.

Joe Tarling (8-1-36-1) entered the fray and got the ball to turn prolifically at times, but struggled to make the breakthrough.

Timsbury were 101-3 at drinks and looking in a good position. But then came the wickets that really stopped the villagers’ innings in its tracks.

A run-out from short fine leg by James Clark, with an excellent pick-up by Charlie Dolman from the throw, was followed by a direct-hit run-out by Tarling from square leg.

With Timsbury now five wickets down, the number five tried to up the rate and hit Tarling hard to deep backward square leg where Robinson took a great pull just before the ball went for six.

Clark (8-1-21-3) had entered the attack just before drinks, and struggled with the length of the pitch. However, his second spell was much better and he took two scalps caught and bowled and another wicket to add to his run-out.

Robinson returned to wrap up the innings in the 40th over for full bowling points for Hampset, Timsbury ending with 132 all out. There were 47 extras.

Kindon and Hughes opened the reply on a deteriorating pitch.

For the second week in a row, Hughes was bowled by a nut that took the top of off-stump.

It was clear that the inconsistent bounce was going to be an issue.

John Dolman hit a few boundaries and looked good until one whacked him on the toe right in front.

With two wickets down, Charlie Dolman joined Kindon. Dolman looked confident but was undone by a ball that kept very low and bounced for a second time just in the crease before hitting middle stump.

Bolton arrived to partner Kindon just as the bowlers found their groove. Bolton played very well to keep out a series of pea-rollers and helmet-breakers, then middled a leg glance directly into the keeper’s gloves.

With four wickets down, Hampset needed fewer than 30 to win.

Kindon and Tarling (18 not out) quickly finished off the game, Hampset reaching their target in the 26th over for full match points.

Victory, achieved at 133-4, was Hampset’s sixth of the season, and their second success in a row.

It was an excellent team win, everyone contributing with the ball, bat or in the field.

Second-bottom Bitton 2nd XI visit Bloomfield Rise on Saturday 9th August for another league game.
