Hampset Sunday XI lost to 10-man Bristol side Old Cathedralians on Sunday 10th August
Hampset’s Sunday XI were beaten by six-wickets when they faced short-handed Old Cathedralians in the North Somerset Cricket League.
The Bristol side could field only 10 players at Bloomfield Rise on Sunday 10th August but they took the honours from the Sunday Conference Division Three match.
Winning the toss, Hampset elected to bat. Ashton Wright and Oscar Costello (45) started well, fending off a good spell from the opening bowlers. Then Wright fell, guiding the ball to mid-wicket.
Sarfaraz Mahar joined Costello. But the pair were unable to recreate their partnership from the previous week, as Mahar departed shortly after arriving, leaving Hampset 46-2 off the first 12 overs.
Charlie Dolman (30) arrived to partner Costello and together they managed an impressive rebuild, taking their side past the 100-run mark and on to 111 before Dolman departed.
Dolman’s wicket led to a minor collapse, with two further wickets falling in the following two overs, leaving Hampset needing to stabilise with 15 overs remaining and the scoreboard reading 127-5.
Jon Hart (27) and Tom Marquiss (22) put on a good partnership of more than 40 runs, the threat of which called for the early reintroduction of the opening bowlers. However, Marquiss was out when he was deceived by a full toss.
The young Alfie-Jay Robinson batted well to support Hart, helping to take Hampset to 180-6 with six overs remaining. Then Hart was ousted in the 35th over, and a final batting collapse was triggered to see Hampset all out for 186 with 25 balls to go.
In reply, the Old Cathedralians openers got off to a flier.
Despite an impressive four-over spell from Robinson (1-15) that gave Hampset an early breakthrough, the opposition batters accelerated without looking back. They had reached 106-2 at the first drinks break, 15 overs into their innings.
The second wicket was claimed by Andy van Roy (7-1-44-1). Hampset were unlucky not to pick up further wickets in this first 15 overs. Dolman caught well off Steve Aust, only for the decision to favour the batting side – and Marquiss struck the number three on the pads shortly afterwards, but the batter survived.
Despite the disappointments, Hampset continued searching for breakthroughs.
Although the somewhat expensive one-over return of Aust allowed them to claim a third scalp, that was the final wicket to be taken – and the opposition reached their target in the 30th over, Hampset generating, but not taking, chances.
Hampset’s man of the match was Robinson, who impressed in his batting cameo, running well with Hart, and was the most dangerous of the home bowlers.
Hampset have no game on Sunday 17th August. The club’s 85th anniversary celebrations will be taking place at Bloomfield Rise that afternoon.
