Hampset 1sts beat league leaders, 2nds skittle hosts for 46

Round-up of Hampset Cricket Club’s matches – Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th July.

Hampset had another successful weekend, with all four of their senior sides winning league matches

Hampset 1st XI took the honours from their Bristol & District Cricket Association Division Three top-of-the-table clash at Bloomfield Rise on Saturday 18th July, beating league leaders Frenchay 2nd XI by 38 runs.

The Scorpions were put in and made 216-5 in their 40 overs.

Opener Ashton Wright departed for 2 but that brought Louis Gratton-Peters to the crease to partner Isaac Bogg. And the pair put on 95 for the second wicket before Gratton-Peters was caught for 33.

Bogg was removed for 58 – with a six and nine fours – off 67 balls, and the exit of Sam Marquiss (4) left Hampset 124-4.

However, Freddy Hiscott came out to join Dan Williams and they added 90 for the fifth wicket. Hiscott made a rapid 40 and Williams compiled 54 not out – containing a six and half-a-dozen fours – from 63 deliveries.

Izzy Patel proved Frenchay’s most profitable bowler, grabbing 2-28 from six overs.

The hosts also lost their first wicket cheaply but advanced to 66-1 thanks to skipper Joe Moss (35) and Max Richards (29). Then a flurry of wickets had Frenchay rocking at 97-6.

Despite 36 from number seven Amarajeewa Kuruppu, Frenchay were restricted to 178-9 in their 40 overs, Hiscott returning 3-36 off eight overs and Ethan Silcox and James Dorey each claiming two victims.

The third-placed Scorpions are 13 points off the summit with six games to go.

Hampset 2nd XI dismissed hosts Whitchurch 2nd XI for 46 and eased to a nine-wicket victory in Bristol & District Cricket Association Division Seven East on 18th July.

Whitchurch chose to bat but it was a move that backfired in spectacular fashion as they crashed to 29-6.

The biggest stand of the innings was between David Millard and Ben Lewis, who added 13 for the seventh wicket. But when they were separated, another collapse ensued. The final three wickets went down with the total on 46.

Lewis (10) was the only batter to get into double figures against a rampaging Hampset attack.

Kit Vella led the way with 3-21 from eight overs, James Boyle pocketed 2-9 off 2.2 overs, Harry Hall had miserly figures of 2-11 in seven overs and Willis Skardon achieved a wicket maiden. There were two run outs.

The Scorpions then lost opener Oscar Costello for 14 with 23 runs on the board. But it was their only setback, Ollie Smith (23 not out) in control to lead them to 50-1 off 8.2 overs. Number three Oliver Rose (2 not out) and extras (11) provided the other runs.

Title-chasing Hampset 3rd XI steamrollered hosts Knowle 4th XI by 238 runs after posting a remarkable 377-2 off 40 overs in their Bristol & District Cricket Association Division Nine East clash on 18th July.

The Scorpions, who chose to bat, celebrated a 124-run stand between Chris Kindon and Gary Peters for the opening wicket. They were parted when Peters was bowled for 33.

That brought Adam Kaby to the crease to join Kindon and they plundered 117 for the second wicket.

Kindon was the man to go, having hit five sixes and 23 fours in making 142 from 101 balls.

His exit paved the way for the biggest partnership of the innings, Kaby and Jon Dolman piling on an undefeated 136 for the third wicket.

Kaby cracked nine sixes and eight fours in his 111 not out from 62 deliveries. And Dolman finished with 71 not out from 28 balls, his knock featuring eight sixes and three fours.

Lewis Stevens and Oliver Kemp were shellshocked home team’s wicket-takers.

Knowle crumbled to 81-8 in response. But captain Sam Long was joined by number 10 Leo Rocke and they dug in to frustrate Hampset and stop their side being routed before reaching three figures.

Long (16 not out) and Rocke (36) put on 58 for the ninth wicket – but the end came at 139 all out from 32.4 overs.

Tom Hutchings snapped up 4-43 off eight overs and Jurie Fick pocketed 3-14 in 4.4 overs.

Hampset Sunday XI maintained their push for the North Somerset League Sunday Conference Division Three championship by beating winless Easton Cowfolk 2nd XI by six wickets at Bloomfield Rise.

The Cowfolk elected to bat in the Sunday 19th July encounter but tumbled to 61-4.

Captain Ben Vigars (38) and Will White (6) restored some stability with a fifth-wicket partnership that produced 39 runs.

But the only subsequent stand of note was for the final wicket, number seven Chaand Bhagora – with a run-a-ball 38 not out – and Callum Booth (5) adding 37.

However, Hampset ensured that Easton had a third 38-run contributor. The hosts conceded 38 extras.

Rufus Fletcher was the Scorpions’ most destructive bowler, with 4-35 from eight overs. But Silcox stifled the batters, returning 1-11 in his eight overs.

Opener Jon Wright was removed for a second-ball duck in the Hampset reply.

But Ashton Wright made up for his failure the previous day by making 51 – including a six and nine fours – from 44 balls. He featured in a second-wicket partnership with Wishal Henry that brought Hampset 95 runs.

Charlie Dolman was sent back without any addition to the score but Costello (27) joined Henry and they put on 60 for the fourth wicket.

Henry finished with 70 not out from 56 balls as the Scorpions closed on 171-4 off 21.4 overs, his innings containing two sixes and 12 fours.

Jonas Williams picked up two wickets for the Cowfolk.
