Bath 1sts romp in basement battle, women march on in national T20

Round-up of Bath Cricket Club’s matches – Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th July.

Jack Scrviens scored a century and Harry Dixon grabbed five wickets as Bath 1st XI destroyed Bristol 1st XI by 140 runs when the sides met at North Parade on Saturday 4th July in West of England Premier League Premier 1.

Opener Scrivens made 101 off 128 balls, hitting four sixes and nine boundaries, to inspire the hosts to a big total in the bottom-of-the-table battle.

Then Dixon took the final five Bristol wickets to seal a home win with more than 13 overs in hand.

Bath’s triumph leaves them 20 points clear of basement side Bristol and four points adrift of sixth-placed Thornbury after 10 rounds of matches.

Bristol’s decision to field backfired on them as Bath piled up 289-6 in their 50 overs.

Scrivens and Ben Wells (40) put on 65 for the first wicket. Then Scrivens and Dixon (33) added 63 for the second wicket.

The biggest partnership was between Scrivens and Sam Young (61), who plundered 89 for the third wicket. Young’s knock spanned 62 balls and contained a six and five fours.

Jack Carstens returned 2-41 from 10 overs for the guests, who slumped to 76-5 in their reply.

Bristol composed themselves to reach 137-5 – but a dramatic collapse followed and they were ripped out for 149 in 36.4 overs, the final four wickets falling for eight runs in only 2.3 overs.

Carstens (39) and Jack Ellison (31) led the way with the bat.

Dixon’s stunning display with the ball saw him secure 5-6 in 2.4 overs. And there was a three-wicket haul for James Arney.

Charlie Brain fell just short of a ton as Bath 2nd XI got the better of hosts Knowle 1st XI by five wickets in West of England Premier League Bristol & North Somerset on 4th July.

Bristol side Knowle chose to bat and were restricted to 189-9 in their 50 overs, having been 58 without loss and 98-5.

The hosts’ innings was held together by number four Joe Brimble, who made 71 – with two sixes and nine fours – off 90 balls.

Harry Allen (3-29 from 10 overs) and Alex Burkhart (3-46 in eight overs) did most of the damage.

Opener Brain was ousted for a run-a-ball 95 when Bath responded, his knock featuring a six and 15 fours.

Brain and Sam Price (24) put on 61 for the first wicket. And Brain and Kester Moseley (26) added 73 for the third wicket, propelling Bath towards a victory that was achieved at 190-5 in 34.3 overs.

Brimble and Jai Kumar each pocketed two wickets.

Bath 3rd XI were dismissed for a paltry 77 by hosts Shirehampton 1st XI on 4th July and were beaten by eight wickets in a Bristol & District Cricket Association Division One game that lasted only 38.3 overs.

The travellers opted to bat at Penpole Lane but were back in the hutch after 26.1 overs, captain Tim Scott and extras sharing the dubious honour of being joint leading scorers with 13 apiece.

John Bean (12), George Timbrell-Whittle (10) and Joe Prescott (10) were the only other batters to make it into double figures against an attack in which Lewis Mason (4-38 from eight overs) and Lewis Palmer (3-17 from 7.1 overs) took top honours.

Bath eased to 20 without loss but were floundering at 25-3 before Bean and Scott shared the biggest stand of the innings in adding 27 for the fourth wicket.

The guests’ hopes were raised when Shirehampton found themselves 17-2 in reply, Rob Patch taking both scalps on his way to 2-30 from six overs.

Enter number four Mason, the hosts’ skipper. He whacked 42 not out from 23 balls to lead the Bristol side to 81-2 off 12.2 overs, opener Aidan Kee finishing unbeaten on a much more sedate 15 from 33 deliveries.

Captain David Pippett scored 81 to set up Bath 4th XI for a 92-run success against Abbots Leigh 1st XI at the Brownsword Ground in Bristol & District Cricket Association Division Six on 4th July.

Put in, the home side posted 219-5 in their 40 overs, Pippett by far the chief run-getter. He stroked 14 boundaries during his 93-ball innings and featured in two big partnerships.

Pippett and Louis Russell (40) put on 85 for the first wicket. And then Pippett and Thiaan Aspeling (47) added 95 for the second wicket.

Sahil Waje, with 2-50 from seven overs, was bottom side Abbots Leigh’s most profitable bowler.

The visitors were reduced to 45-5 in response and were shot out for 127 in 31.1 overs, Ashik Mia (4-28 off six overs) and Alan Alex (3-23 from eight overs) the main destroyers.

Number seven Syed Ali Eazaz was the only Abbots Leigh batter to offer serious resistance, making 52 off 36 balls.

Bath Wanderers 1st XI breezed into the Group 4 final of the ECB Women’s Club T20 by beating Golden Hill Women’s 1st XI by seven wickets at the Brownsword Ground on Friday 3rd July.

Bristol-based Golden Hill were held to 108-5 in their 20 overs after electing to bat, opener Mirre van der Werf top-scoring with 49 from 62 balls.

Van der Werf was one of three victims of Connie Osborn.

The Wanderers crashed to 14-3 in reply but Maddie White (52 not out) and Genevieve Donaldson (37 not out) put together an unbroken 95-run stand for the fourth wicket to bring victory at 109-3 from 18.2 overs.

Kate Duffield snaffled two wickets for Golden Hill.

In the final, the Wanderers will face St Cross Symondians, from Winchester, Hampshire.
