Two weightlifters with University of Bath links have been named in the England team to compete at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Zoe Smith, a bronze medallist at the Delhi 2010 Commonwealths aged just 16, competes in the under-58kg class in Glasgow. She currently does some of her training in the Team Bath Gym.

And University of Bath Sports Performance study Sonny Webster has been selected to make his Commonwealth Games debut in Glasgow. He goes in the under-94kg class.

Smith, who became England’s first woman weightlifting medallist at a Commonwealth Games four years ago, said: “I’m delighted to have been selected to represent England at what will be my second Commonwealth Games.

“This will be my main focus for the year and I’m definitely aiming to improve on my bronze medal from Delhi.”

Webster said: “This is my first Commonwealth Games and I am so excited, I came so close to selection for Delhi and London so to actually make it means so much. My training is going well and I’m in great shape, so I hope to be in contention for a medal.”

Their selection brings the number of athletes with University of Bath links selected for Glasgow to 32. They will represent seven countries in seven sports.

They will compete for England, Ghana, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Jersey, Scotland and Wales, in athletics, badminton, hockey, judo, shooting, swimming and weightlifting.
