University of Bath student and scholar Katie Tomsett finished fifth in sailing’s World 470 Junior Championships and 30th in the seniors.

Tomsett, who is studying for a BA (Hons) in Sport and Social Sciences at the University, partnered Joanna Freeman at the competition at La Rochelle in France.

They were the highest placed British finishers in the junior event, ranked fifth in the 25-strong fleet after 11 races.

The young pairing then went on to come 30th of the 53 boats in the senior World Championships, making them the fourth highest GB crew. Last year the pair finished 39th at the senior World Championships in Barcelona.

Twenty-year-old Tomsett receives a Santander Sports Scholarship at the University and is a member of the British Sailing Team’s Podium Potential Squad.
