Bath Rugby’s women claim House of Hope 7s crown in London

Bath Rugby were crowned women’s champions at the House of Hope 7s in London last weekend (5th and 6th July).

They won all of their matches in the competition hosted by Saracens Amateur Rugby Club.

With Sofia Mazzone scoring two tries, Bath thumped Hackney Gladies 45-5. Also crossing the line were Charlotte Wellon, Liv Lewis, Jess Doyle, Anya Small and Ellie Ratcliffe.

Jas Abel touched down twice in a 38-5 victory over Wild Dogs. There was one try apiece for Megan Barwick, Small, Doyle and Wellon.

Abel also notched a brace as Bamboos were defeated 38-12, Lewis, Wellon and Barwick each going over once.

Bath faced Wild Dogs again in the final. This time, Doyle (2), Barwick (2) and Abel were the Bath try-scorers in a 29-12 success.

Abel was named Pol Roger Player of the Tournament for her explosive line breaks, sharp footwork and dominance in defence.

The tournament was organised by Jack Goldberg, grandson of the late anti-apartheid activist Denis Goldberg.

It raised money for South African charity the Denis Goldberg Legacy Foundation Trust and its flagship charitable enterprise the Denis Goldberg House of Hope.

The Denis Goldberg House of Hope is an arts and culture education centre that provides access to art, dance, music and other activities for youngsters from the various communities within the Hout Bay area of Cape Town.
