Bath Rugby Ladies earned their first win of the season away at Wasps II last Sunday. A hard-fought battle in which the lead changed hands several times eventually saw the visitors come away with a 15-16 victory.
The opening minutes of the game saw Bath dominate both territory and possession, and capitalised on this with a try from pint-size hooker Laura Groves. Wasps fought back to dominate possession, however the visitors earned a penalty in the home 22 which centre Sarah Holloway successfully converted for another 3 points.
Wasps then struck back, and after a succession of forward phases, touched down for a try, with the conversion falling just short.
After the turnaround, with the wind at their backs and in their sails, the home side further dominated possession. After a couple of unsuccessful visits to the Bath line, Wasps eventually reached through to score again and take the lead, bringing the tally to 10-8.
With the teams at a stalemate, Wasps kicked through the line and managed to retrieve the ball to score their third try.
Bath fought back, and after an intense period of powerful play from both sides, Bath’s determination was rewarded with Emily Hunter powering over to score in the left hand corner.
The visitors built on this momentum and maintained possession in the Wasps half. A penalty in front of the posts gave Bath the opportunity to snatch a late score, edging ahead to a 15-16 lead. The ladies then held on for a tense final five minutes to secure a much-needed victory.
