Bath Cricket Club bounced back from their mauling by Downend to defeat guests Frocester by 43 runs in West of England Premier League Premier One last Saturday (28th June).

Put in at North Parade, the city XI clocked up 213-7 in their 50 overs.

Opener Jack Scrivens went cheaply, but South African Brad Porteous (38) and Kester Moseley (18) steadied the ship with a second-wicket stand worth 55.

However, Bath soon found themselves 91-4. Then skipper Harry Ellison and Hamish Bell added 52 for the fifth wicket, the partnership broken when the latter was run out for 15.

Ellison was joined by James Arney and the duo shared a 50-run stand for the sixth wicket. They were separated when Ellison was bowled by Richie Cave for 86, his knock spanning 88 deliveries and featuring nine fours and two sixes.

Arney was unbeaten on 21 at the close, Cave the pick of Gloucestershire outfit Frocester’s attack with 4-45 from his 10 overs.

The visitors were going along nicely at 71-2 in response but slumped to 96-6. There was no way back from that – and they were skittled for 170 in 44.1 overs.

Captain Will Naish, batting at number six, led the way with a 57-ball 56 that included nine boundaries. But the second-highest scorer was extras (32).

Joe Heywood snapped up 3-33 off 8.1 overs for Bath. There were two wickets apiece for Matthew Cadywould, Spencer Gammon and Louis Brown.

Bath, who hold fourth place in the league table, are at home again this Saturday (5th July) when they take on Wiltshire side Burbage & Easton Royal.

Lansdown suffered their second successive reverse in West of England Premier League Premier Two Bristol/Somerset when they went down by 16 runs at Congresbury on 28th June.

The North Somerset team elected to bat and, with wicket-keeper Matt Thompson starring with 87 not out, posted 241-6 from 50 overs. Thompson cracked 11 fours in his 74-ball innings.

Congresbury had another half-centurion in opener Peter Woodland, whose 53 was scored rather more sedately – off 95 deliveries. Skipper Justin Yau made 33.

Ex-Glamorgan player Sam Pearce (2-37 from 10 overs) and Josh Smith (2-38 from nine overs) were the most successful members of the Lansdown attack.

In reply, the travellers lost George Scott (6) to see them 39-1.

But that brought captain Jordan Smith and Praneel Choughule together – and they crafted a 101-run partnership.

They were parted when Smith was bowled by Yau for 80, with three sixes and 11 fours, off 99 deliveries.

Choughule (70) and Noah Davis (36) continued the fight with a fourth-wicket stand that yielded 57 runs. But then five wickets tumbled for 16 runs and Lansdown were stuck on 225-8 when the overs ran out.

Toby Lawrence (3-29 in eight overs) and Prabath Perera (3-37 from 10 overs) shone with the ball for Congresbury.

Fourth-placed Lansdown will head to Bristol’s Golden Hill – who are third – on 5th July.
