Over 50s keen to improve their computer skills are being encouraged to sign up for Age UK B&NES’ popular Silver Surfers classes.

The classes are aimed at complete beginners and take place at St Michael’s Centre in Bath. The next four-week course starts on Wednesday 4th September, and costs just £12.

Over 100 local older people have already benefited from the classes, run by a team of volunteers. The team teaches the basics – using laptop computers and new ipads – and is keen to remove the fear that many people have when it comes to technology, computers and the internet.

Comments from satisfied students include:

  • “I was a somewhat nervous beginner but the enthusiastic and patient tutors were encouraging.  The one to one tuition was ideal.  There was a relaxed, friendly and humorous atmosphere, which put everyone at ease.”
  •  “I enjoyed the course and found everyone very friendly and helpful. I would advise anyone like me who knew nothing about computers but would like to, to give it a go.”
  • “After ‘dipping a toe in the water’ I feel enthused to continue and find out more, despite not having a computer – yet!  The expertise and time given by the volunteers was very much appreciated.”

Paula Smith from Age UK B&NES said: “Having computer skills is becoming more and more important and can make life much easier for people, allowing them to access information they need and keep in touch with family and friends.

“These courses are suitable for people who have little or no computing experience. Many people, even those who have computers at home, are daunted by the technology or lack confidence and this course will help tackle that.”

To book a place or find out more about the ongoing Silver Surfers courses, contact Paula Smith, Age UK Bath and North East Somerset, on 01225 484510.

Age UK B&NES is a local charity that supports around 12,000 older people, their families and carers every year, with essential services. It has a small team of staff and around 150 volunteers who assist with a variety of tasks including day care and lunch club provision, toenail cutting and home from hospital services.
