The planned regeneration of the centre of Radstock is once again picking up pace with improvements being made to the road system to support new homes and jobs.
Now that the Christmas road works embargo is over – and Wessex Water has completed its Fortescue Road essential sewer upgrade – the Council can continue with the planned regeneration works in the centre of Radstock to improve the town’s infrastructure and prospects for the future.
Work programmed over the next few weeks has been carefully planned to ensure a smooth flow of traffic for the benefit of visitors, traders and residents. This includes:
- Temporary lights on Frome Road will be in place from 6th-13th January for essential drainage and gas works which were unable to be completed before the Christmas road works embargo.
- Temporary traffic lights will control traffic flow at the Victoria Hall end of Fortescue Road for the next two weeks but the road will remain open to traffic at all times, except for buses.
- In order to support bus passengers during the final few months of work, from 12 January the bus stops will be relocated to the same temporary locations used while Wessex Water were completing their works. These will be in place until the new link road is open and fully functioning.
- A pedestrian route along the new link road from Frome Road to The Street will be opened at the end of next week by 16th January.
Bath & North East Somerset Council has notified local bus operators Somerbus and First Bus of the re-instatement of the temporary bus stops.
The Council has placed notices on the existing bus shelters on The Street advising passengers of the location of the temporary bus stops and the diversions which apply to buses only from 12th January.
In addition, the Council has updated its guidance to bus passengers through the national Traveline service.
Cllr Ben Stevens (Lib-Dem, Widcombe), Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Cabinet Member for Sustainable Development, said: “We are working with local traders throughout this project to ensure that people know Radstock town centre is open for business.
“We’d like to thank people for their patience during this exciting project which is putting a great deal of investment into Radstock to improve the roads, bring in new housing and jobs.”
Over £1 million was granted to support the upgrade of the road system in Radstock by central Government, to help people move around the town better, relieve congestion, and pave the way for new homes and jobs on the former railway land.
Work began in July 2014 and is on target to be completed by May 2015.
Bath & North East Somerset Council is meeting regularly with local traders to provide them with up to date information and support them during this period.
At the start of the work, leaflets were sent to all homes and businesses and a new Radstock Shopping leaflet was launched in November.
