A local publishing team scooped the top prize at a local charity event, the annual Brain of Bath, which took place in Bath last week.
Ordinarily knowing your Gorgonzola from your Stilton and the capital city of Chile are pearls of wisdom which don’t pop up in day to day conversations. However these were exactly the sort of nuggets of knowledge which featured at the annual Brain of Bath corporate quiz event.
After a lively contest amongst the competing teams Future Publishing came away with the coveted title and the very grand Waterford Crystal trophy. Hot on their heels were St James’ Wine Vaults in second and Bath Magazine in third place.
Organiser, Cecil Weir from Julian House, was delighted that event continued to be so popular.
He said: “This was the fifteenth event – having started way back in 1999. The venue is terrific but I’m sure the main reason that companies support it is the fact that it is a cracking night out. Great for team building and a fun way to support the work of Julian House.
“There’s a bit of a quiz animal in most of us which explains why programmes such as Millionaire are so popular. And we enjoy the torture of nearly knowing that tune that on the tip of our tongue or the unidentified smell that could be Gram Masala or Cumin!”
In the quizmistress’ hot seat was BBC presenter Ali Vowles who delivered the questions and helped to keep the tight timetable on track. During a light hearted interview at half time she shared with the audience some of the more humorous incidents which had occurred over her long career at the BBC and confirmed that working with animals and children was always fraught with risk.
The main sponsor for the event was Bath Building Society. Chief Executive, Dick Jenkins had the double pleasure of presenting the main prize and collecting one, when his team won a round award:
He added: “We are delighted to be supporting the Brain of Bath Quiz and Julian House in the great work they do in the city. It’s always a great night. Both the quiz and the auction raise much needed funds for the charity’s work.
“It’s very fitting that people from some of the most impressive and successful businesses in Bath can come together and do something meaningful for people who have fallen on hard times and need help.”
The final proceeds from the event are likely to be £7-8000 which will be used to fund key frontline homeless services in an around Bath.
