Bath & North East Somerset Council has taken the first step towards deciding the future of the former Culverhay School site in Bath, and will be inviting residents to give their views.
The Bath Community Academy closed its doors in July 2018
The council is developing an initial comprehensive list of possibilities based on its key principles to deliver for residents, prepare for the future and focus on prevention.
The options will need to take into account constraints around planning, resources and sustainability to achieve the best outcome for the community.
Consultants Avison Young have been commissioned by the council to carry out the research and engagement process towards achieving a new future for the site.
Avison Young will support the council in developing the shortlist of viable options for public consultation later in 2020.
Culverhay School became Bath Community Academy in 2012 before it closed its doors in July 2018.
Councillor Kevin Guy, cabinet member for Children’s Services, said: “We recognise that this site is important to residents and there are some strong opinions about what should be provided there.
“Although we are keeping an open mind at this stage, it’s crucial that the community should benefit from something at the site that will be well-used and will improve their lives.
“We want to see some form of educational use remaining at the heart of the site.
“Any development must also meet our objectives around sustainability and making the district carbon neutral by 2030.
“I’d like to emphasise that residents’ views on the site’s future are at the heart of this because one of our core priorities is to deliver for our communities.
“We will need to hear from you once we have a well-considered list of options later this year and will keep residents fully informed at each stage in the process.”
