Plans to replace the roof of the Gateway Centre at Snow Hill but keep its distinctive colouring have been approved by Bath & North East Somerset Council, along with retrofit works to the ageing building.

Run by Bath charity the Genesis Trust, the centre, with its distinctive green roof, was originally built as a church hall as part of the Snow Hill development more than six decades ago.

The existing copper roof covering will be replaced with an alternative coated metal to match the appearance and detailing of the aged copper as closely as possible and ensure the roof will be weathertight for the next generation.

Additional insulation will be added within the loft space to improve the centre’s thermal performance.

The approved works include installing new windows and doors and adding an accessible ramp following the removal of steps.

At lower ground level, the WC and laundry area will be converted for use as an accessible WC. On the upper ground floor level, the existing accessible WC will be enlarged to accommodate an accessible shower.

Genesis offers practical help to people who are homeless and vulnerable, as well as long-term guidance and opportunities through interlinked projects to help people rebuild their lives.
