Ben Howlett, the MP for Bath, has received hundreds of responses to his survey asking Bath residents for their views on the proposed closure of Bath Magistrates’ and County Court.
Ben launched the survey after receiving a letter from Shailesh Vara, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Justice announcing a consultation into the closure of 91 courts and tribunal services across England and Wales, which included Bath Magistrates’ and County Court.
So far, 86% of those who have responded to the survey value having the Magistrates’ Court in the city, whilst only 13% of residents agree with the current plans to close the court.
Ben has also received suggestions for alternative venues for the court facilities including the Guildhall, Bath Pavilion and either university site, however most responses mentioned that the court was the only suitable option.
Ben Howlett said: “It is clear from these survey responses as well as the many emails and letters I have received from both legal professionals and bath residents alike, that there are very strong feelings on this matter.
“During September, I will be formulating my response to the consultation and I want to include the views of as many residents as possible in order to present a compelling case to the Ministry of Justice as to why they should keep Bath Magistrates’ and County Court.
“There is still time to submit your views if you would like to.
