Fay Whitfield, a postgraduate student from Bath, has been chosen to stand for the Green Party in Lambridge in May’s election, vowing to ‘give a voice to everyone, including young people in politics.’
Fay and Councillor Lin Patterson have been working on a number of local campaigns together, such as the Clean Air Zone, Climate Emergency petition and the luxury housing development by Avon Rugby Football Club.
The Green’s candidate will be standing on a platform of improving public transport in the ward, looking to increase the provision of affordable housing and supporting locally produced energy and food.
Fay said: “Many decisions made by politicians today will affect young people the most. We have eleven years to combat climate change, and the under 18’s who have no political say now will be the young adults who’ll face the consequences of today’s decisions.
“That’s why I want to work with local schools and young people to find out what their concerns are in Lambridge. I went to St Mark’s School, so I know what it’s like to be in their shoes.
“All residents in Lambridge are entitled to a healthy environment to live in, so I have been sitting in Residents Association meetings on the Clean Air Zone (CAZ) proposals and I have concerns that Lambridge will become a rat run for cars avoiding the CAZ.
“The Green Party is the only party to have published it’s CAZ response, and we believe our suggestions will eliminate this problem.”
“Lambridge is a unique community, from its collection of independent businesses to the Alice Park Community Garden. We are already producing our own food, culture and lifestyle and I want to support the schemes which enable this to bloom, as well as locally produced clean energy.”
The next local government elections, which includes Bath & North East Somerset Council, Parish and Town Councils, will be held on Thursday 2nd May 2019.
