One of Jacob Rees-Mogg’s nearest neighbours is running as the Green Party candidate to become his new local councillor.

A by-election for the Mendip ward on Bath & North East Somerset Council is happening on Thursday, 3rd July, after Liberal Democrat councillor David Wood stepped down on health grounds.

The full list of candidates has now been announced.

The Mendip ward stretches from Temple Cloud to East and West Harptree, covering Cameley, Hinton Blewett, Coley, and North and South Widcombe.

Former local Conservative MP Jacob Rees-Mogg, whose Gournay Court home is located in West Harptree, is among the people represented by the Mendip councillor.

Charles Harrison Fenn lives directly across the street from Sir Jacob, but their politics are not quite so close.

He is running as the Green Party candidate. He previously ran for councillor in 2023 and received 50 votes (4.6%).

Liberal Democrat candidate Simon James McCombe also lives in the village, and is hoping to be the area’s second ever Liberal Democrat councillor.

Mr Wood became the first Liberal Democrat to represent the council seat in 2019, when he unseated then Conservative council leader Tim Warren.

Meanwhile, Sir Jacob has signed the nomination forms as the proposer for the Conservative Party candidate Jon Elford.

The full list of candidates is:

  • Stuart Michael Ball (Reform UK)
  • Martin Edward Burton (Labour)
  • Jon Elford (Conservative)
  • Charles Harrison Fenn (Green)
  • Simon James McCombe (Liberal Democrat)

You will need to take photo ID with you to vote.
