Conservative Councillor for Combe Down and newly elected Chair of the Bath City Forum, Bob Goodman was recently nominated to spend 24 hours in jail, in the name of charity.

The councillor was nominated for having “his voice mail constantly full”.

Bob was one of 80 or so “criminals” who had to endure a night inShepton Mallet prison to raise money for SOS Africa, a local Charity who fund education for Townships in South Africa.

Speaking of his experience of going to jail for the day, Cllr Goodman said: “It was surreal to spend a night in the prison cell the Kray twins occupied.

“We were paraded through the streets of Shepton Mallet in chains before being incarcerated into the jail.

“Locked in a cell in the pitch black and freezing cold certainly made you think about life and to be woken up at 6 am with a siren to be frog-marched to the gym for morning circuit training had many wishing they were not there.

“However, it was a very interesting experience and all in a good cause, just not one I’d like to repeat any time soon!

“I’d like to thank all those who have sponsored me, including fellow councillors from across the political spectrum.”

This charity event was the last time the prison will be occupied having closed as a “lifers” prison in 2013.

Bob hopes to raise £1,000 and any further contributions can still be made via:  https://www.justgiving.com/InmateGoodman/.
