Bath’s new MP, Ben Howlett, has joined other MPs in calling on the Government to take greater responsibility and leadership in resolving the ongoing refugee crisis.

He said: “The traumatic photographs seen across the papers today which show a little boy drowned on a Greek beach epitomises the human tragedy that is happening every day on our European borders.

“The risks that people are putting their families through to escape immense hardships overseas are unimaginable to many in the Western World.

“I am joining MPs from all political parties to call for the Government to take greater international leadership to help resolve this issue.

“This is first and foremost a humanitarian issue and we must act accordingly. Britain has a long and proud history of supporting and assisting those in need.

“While I understand the pressures that our country faces in terms of resources, I agree with the UN that the British Government ought to be providing additional interim support until long-term solutions to international migration can be delivered.

“As a member of the newly formed House of Commons Petitions Select Committee, I very much hope that we can debate this issue with urgency.

“Therefore I would urge all those who want to see more action to sign the petition here: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/105991.”
