Ben Howlett, the Member of Parliament for Bath, has been given the opportunity to closely scrutinise the Higher Education and Research Bill whilst sitting on its Public Bill Committee.
During the committee stage, members of the committee will be hearing evidence from experts and interest groups as well as examining the bill line by line.
They will consider amendments that have been selected with the aim of returning an improved Bill to the House of Commons chamber later this year.
Following the first Committee meeting, Ben said: “I was pleased to be selected for this important Public Bill Committee given my experience of the higher education sector.
“Representing a constituency which boasts two fantastic universities, with a large student population, means I am well placed to understand the problems universities currently face.
“I will be looking carefully at the Bill to make sure it works to improve the student experience and teaching whilst protecting universities.”
The Higher Education and Research Bill will implement a new teaching excellence framework which focuses on raising the standard of education that students receive.
Ben has so far been involved with every stage of the Bill’s progress, commenting on the proposed Bill and speaking in the second reading in the House of Commons.
