Former leader of Bath and North East Somerset Council Tim Warren has been made an alderman of the city.
The title, which has been bestowed less than a week after Mr Warren was awarded a CBE for services to local government, recognises long service and was handed to a dozen former councillors who did not stand or lost their seat at last month’s elections.
Congratulating Mr Warren on his CBE, council chairman Eleanor Jackson said: “We couldn’t be happier to have Tim as a companion. He was always ready to listen to a good idea, or tell you if it wasn’t.
“I think we shall all miss him – but it may be we will see back soon as the Weca [West of England Combined Authority] mayor.
“This is a bittersweet moment. So many who we count as friends have retired or been stood down by the electorate.”
Mr Warren said: “It’s been a great honour to lead this council.
“The officers work extremely hard, as do councillors. It’s been an honour to work with all of you.”
The title of honorary alderman or alderwoman recognises former councillors who have served 12 years or more.
Their names are inscribed in a leather-bound book and they may be invited to civic functions.
Eleven other councillors also received the title in the ceremony at the Guildhall on Thursday.
These included:
- Colin Barrett – Weston 2003 – 2019
- Cherry Beath – Combe Down 2007- 2019
