A bike and vehicle road safety operation by police in Bath this morning saw twenty cyclists and eight motorists stopped for a range of driving offences.
The cyclists were all given advice about not cycling on the pavement and ignoring red traffic lights.
The eight motorists were stopped for a range of offences including not wearing a seatbelt, using a mobile phone when driving, document offences and vehicle defects.
Seven were given advice and warnings. One woman, a van driver, was summonsed to court for a number offences including using a mobile phone, not wearing a seatbelt, having no MOT or road tax, and vehicle faults.
The road safety operation, on the A4 London Road at Cleveland Place, was the first in a weekly series, with the location changing each time, to educate cyclists and motorists on the proper use of the road.
Bath Sgt Clive Summerill said: “On the whole it was a very successful event that in general was well-received by everyone we stopped and spoke to. We’re not out to ambush drivers or cyclists – we just want to raise everyone’s awareness of road safety and responsibility.”
A second similar operation will be held next week, in a location yet to be decided.
