The Ugly Sisters in the Theatre Royal Bath’s pantomime Cinderella have joined a campaign encouraging locals to make full use of recycling services over the Christmas break.
Every month in the UK the average family throws away £60-worth of food which could have been eaten – and the amount during Christmas almost certainly increases.
Just by recycling six mince pie foil cases over Christmas, it’s possible to save enough energy to watch an episode of Downton Abbey.
The Council’s Waste Services Team has spoken to around 4,500 residents at roadshows over the year, advising on how to reduce the amount of waste disposed of.
Now, Bath’s pantomime Dames are backing-up that message and encouraging residents to recycle as much as possible, highlighting the wide range of items which can be recycled from clothes to Christmas trees.
The Theatre Royal’s Ugly Sisters, played by actors David Ball and Byron Mondahl, said: “Everyone familiar with the story of Cinderella knows that we step-sisters are not fans of household chores.
“But recycling is so easy, even we can do it! Just follow the simple guidelines and you can recycle to your heart’s content.
“We’re calling on all Bath and North East Somerset residents to recycle their Christmas waste this year, you know it makes sense.”
Cllr Dave Dixon (Lib Dem, Oldfield), Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “I’m delighted that the pantomime cast is supporting us to promote the importance of recycling.
“We’re all likely to produce more waste at Christmas but the good news is that most of it can be recycled using our extensive services.
“This year, to deal with the extra recycling at Christmas, some Council vehicles will be mixing recycling together when it is picked up. Please don’t worry, it will be separated out again before it is recycled.”
Everything collected for recycling is made into useful new products, helping to save energy and resources. The green recycling box can be used for a whole range of items including:
- Greetings cards, wrapping paper (white backed non foil) and gift tags;
- Clothes and shoes;
- All glass bottles and jars;
- Plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays such as cream pots;
- Foil, such as mince pie cases, and takeaway trays;
- Cans, tins and aerosols – including biscuit and sweet tins;
- Batteries – all types including rechargeable ones;
The blue bag can be used to recycle cardboard packaging, brown paper and cartons. In Bath and North East Somerset all food waste can be recycled including turkey bones and uncooked food can be composted in a home compost bin.
Small electrical items can also be recycled from home, and larger items like TVs can be taken to the local recycling centre.
There are no recycling and rubbish collections on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Garden waste and Christmas tree collections:
There are no garden waste collections for 2 weeks from Monday 22nd December to Friday 2nd January 2015. They will begin again on Monday January 5th, 2015, and from January 5th to 30th the Council will collect your real Christmas tree for no charge as part of the fortnightly garden waste collection service. The trees will then be composted.
Collection dates:
There will be no recycling or rubbish collections on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. If your collection would have fallen on Christmas Day, it will take place on Saturday 27th December. If it would have been on Boxing Day, it will be on Friday 2nd January, and if it would have been on 1st January, it will be on Saturday 3rd January.
Recycling centres:
Recycling Centres are closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, otherwise they will be open as follows: Monday to Friday 8am – 4.15pm; Saturday 9am – 3.45pm; Sunday 9am – 1pm.
