The 47 foot long narrowboat is believed to have been on hire when the incident happened.

The boat got into difficulties and started to overturn while negotiating the locks near Widcombe at around 2pm.

There has been no report of any casualties.

The Canal and River Trust, which maintains the waterways across the area, has closed the route between lock seven at the River Avon, to lock eleven, where the incident has taken place, adjacent to Pulteney Road.

They have apologised for any inconvenience caused.

A crane is to be used on Tuesday or Wednesday to lift the boat free from its current position.
