Police, the fire brigade and paramedics arrived on scene at Newbridge Road, and swiftly closed the section of road between the Twerton Fork and the Old Newbridge Hill.

Emergency calls came in at 5.15pm reporting the incident.

On arrival of the emergency services, one person was still trapped in one of the vehicles and Avon Fire & Rescue used specialist cutting equipment to free them.

South Western Ambulance Service took two people to the RUH from the scene, with police keeping the road closed while recovery and investigation work was carried out.

The road re-opened at around 8.30pm.

Delays caused by the crash saw traffic backing up towards Julian Road and through Kingsmead as commuters struggled to get to the A4 to head out towards Bristol.
