Bath Spa University and Theatre Royal Bath have announced a new Cultural Partnership which sees the University become the Theatre’s official higher education partner.
The two organisations have a long history in Bath and this new partnership builds upon existing and successful collaborations. In particular it will provide:
- Bath Spa students an opportunity to audition and perform in professional productions;
- A number of technical theatre work placements each year for Bath Spa students;
- New teaching and learning opportunities, and;
- A new MA in Theatre for Young Audiences.
The MA in Theatre for Young Audiences is a key element of this new partnership. It builds on Bath Spa’s expertise in theatre production, performance and writing for young audiences.
Students on the course will benefit from development training days at Theatre Royal Bath as well as the opportunity to work in a professional theatre environment at the egg.
Exposing children to the arts is an important part of their cultural development and this new MA will allow students to develop new theatre productions that are tailor made for this large and important audience.
Professor Christina Slade, Vice-Chancellor, Bath Spa University said: “I am delighted that we are now Bath Theatre Royal’s official higher education partner. Our long-standing relationship and natural affinity in theatre and performance means that together we can nurture innovative creativity in the performers, directors, writers and artists of the future.”
Bath is fast becoming a creative hub of performance and writing and for young audiences. the egg is renowned for offering placements for young people to participate in the process of making theatre.
It has recently launched ‘The Incubator’, a new programme that encourages talented artists to write and make specifically for young audiences.
Kate Cross, Director of the egg theatre said: “We are delighted to be formalising our creative partnership with Bath Spa University across all its performing arts-related courses. We are proud to be associated with the University’s new MA in Theatre for a Young Audience, it being one of only two such courses in the whole of the UK.
“Between us we believe we can create a new generation of high quality theatre artists who will provide the industry with live performance that meets the needs of a 21st century audience and particularly paying attention to young audiences, for whom innovation, creativity and modernity are key.”
A special event to celebrate the launch of this new cultural partnership is being held on Monday 30th June at the egg theatre. Guests will hear more about how the partnership has been forged as well as details of the new MA in Theatre for Young Audiences.
