Don Foster, the MP for Bath and Communities Minister has announced a weekend of free gigs for the people of Bath this summer.
The concerts are part of “Our Big Gig” – a nationwide scheme – that will bring people from all backgrounds together to celebrate local musical talents and get more people involved in music making.
Bath gigs include the Widcombe Choir at St Matthew’s Church, Widcombe on Thursday 11th July, local bands at Widcombe Social Club on Friday 12th July and participative music for schoolchildren at St. Mark’s Community Centre on Saturday 13th July. Organisers are also welcoming further event applications for the city.
The programme is part of the UK Government’s Olympics legacy commitment and builds on the success of last year’s Bandstand Marathon.
Commenting, Don Foster said: “This summer thousands of people in Bath will get the chance to see fantastic local performers play a huge variety of music right on their own doorstep.
“Adding to the cultural legacy of the amazing Olympic summer last year this will enhance Bath’s vibrant music scene giving everyone an opportunity to get involved and perform themselves – perhaps people will want to pick up a ukulele!”
“I urge people to check out their nearest gig, and be a part of a great community event.”
Katharine Lane of Superact said: “Thanks to support from Don Foster at the DCLG and the Arts Council all events are free for local people to go along to and we really hope that people will be inspired to get involved in music making after attending an Our Big Gig event in July.
“There are still opportunities for people to get involved, and if anyone wants to get in touch about delivering an extra event in Bath then please get in touch with the Our Big Gig team”.
