Don Foster has welcomed figures released by Barclays which show that business start-ups in the Bath area have risen by 20% in the second quarter of 2013 compared to the same period last year.
This increase is even more impressive when compared to the 5% increase seen on a national scale. In addition to this, turnover from small businesses in the area has increased by 10% from the second quarter of 2012. Again this is more than the national figure, which stands at 6%.
For Bath, this means further good news to add to the promising figures released earlier this month that showed the number of unemployed claimants is falling in Bath.
Commenting, Don Foster MP said: “These latest figures provide more evidence that Bath’s economy is growing stronger and more and more people are willing to set up a business here.
“In Government the Liberal Democrats have been working hard to build a stronger economy and a fairer society, enabling people to get on in life in ways such as starting up a business. It is great that we are seeing successes like this in Bath.”

Monday 18th November, 2013 at 20:03This is not necessarily a good thing. People are being forced to set up on their own in order to make some sort of living, mainly because there are no decent jobs in the area. A lot of these people then go on to draw minimal salaries for a long period of time.
The bigger question that should be asked, and answered, is why has there been a 20% increase in new businesses and would this have happened if companies in the area were aggressively recruiting.
Clearly if these businesses grow and employ people then brilliant, but I just cant see that happening so before we jump up and down about how brilliant this news is, we should look a little bit more closely at the reasons why.
