Staff in the Emergency Department at the RUH in Bath are now sitting comfortably in their own garden space, thanks to a one-man marathon cul-de-sac challenge.

84-year-old Fred Dugan

Staff have been presented with new wooden garden furniture by 84-year-old Fred Dugan, who was so inspired by the fundraising exploits of Captain, now Sir, Tom Moore, that he decided to set his own charity target, to walk 100 times around The Linleys in Lower Weston.

Fred hoped to raise £100, but thanks to the generosity of all his neighbours and friends, the total reached £500.

Fred’s wife Jackie was a well-loved volunteer in the Emergency Department before her retirement, and the couple have always been enthusiastic fundraisers.

Jackie led the Thursday tribute for key workers each week in her community.

ED Senior Sister Caroline Jolley said: “I was invited to collect the money and all the residents came out and I gave a thank you speech.

“It was a very moving moment to see the support the RUH receives and especially our Emergency Department.

“We’re lucky at the RUH that we have a lovely site with lots of natural space and gardens to relax in, as well as our own staff garden.

“We’d like to thank Fred for his amazing 100 laps, his ‘manager’ Jackie and the wonderful support of the residents of The Linleys and their families.

“Your generous donation has enabled us the buy a picnic bench and two garden benches which will now provide areas for staff to relax and recharge in during our shifts.

“We are extremely grateful and appreciative.”
