The single-deck bus had been travelling down Lansdown View towards the Lower Bristol Road at around 6.20pm, when it became stuck under the railway bridge on Jews Lane.
The bus, which became lodged due to the six foot six inches height limit, was badly damaged in the incident.
The driver is believed to have escaped unharmed by breaking through the rear window, though the force of the impact with the bridge shattered most of the bus’ other windows.
The bus was not carrying any passengers at the time of the collision.
It was pulled away from the bridge under the guidance of the emergency services, but a tow truck that was sent to collect the vehicle at 7.30pm was too small.
A lorry with a flat trailer later arrived to take the bus away at around 9.40pm and the road was reopened by police at 10.15pm.
First Bus have not yet made a comment about the incident.
