People living and working in the Avon Fire & Rescue Service area are being urged to take extra care during bonfire night and firework celebrations as firefighters take part in two national strikes.
In an on-going dispute with the Government over pensions, Fire Brigades’ Union (FBU) members will stage a four and a half hour strike on Friday 1st November between 18.30hrs and 23.00hrs. They will also walk out on Monday 4th November between 06.00hrs and 08.00hrs.
During the strike, a skeleton service will operate from six strategic locations across the AF&RS area. Fire cover will be provided in the main by firefighters who are not part of the FBU.
They will work alongside a small number of auxiliary firefighters who have received training to provide basic support to fully qualified crews.
Due to the reduced emergency service, members of the public are advised to expect longer response times as calls will be prioritised towards those where there is a risk to life.
Chief Fire Officer Kevin Pearson said: “With many bonfire and firework celebrations taking place over this coming weekend, we would like to remind people to take extra precautions.
“We would always advise people to go to organised displays as these tend to be much safer. A list of organised displays taking place in the AF&RS area can be found on our website.
“Although we have resilience plans in place during the industrial action, they are not a direct replacement for the service we normally provide. If you are planning to hold your own bonfire and firework celebrations, please take care and follow our safety tips.
“Simple things like building the bonfire well away from trees and fences, having a bucket of water nearby in case a bonfire gets out of control and making sure the person in charge leaves the drinking until after the fireworks can help make your event safer.”
AF&RS is also asking members of the public to help them prevent unnecessary 999 calls this Bonfire Night. Letting neighbours know if you are having a bonfire may help to reduce the number of false alarm calls received by the service.
